                    World Championship Round Up

Eighteen players from Saval travelled to join the 2000+ competitors drawn from throughout the globe to the purpose built 21 court arena in The Citywest Hotel Dublin to compete in the recent World Handball Championships. Saval was represented from U11 level through to Over 55’s with all players acquitting themselves well.

In boys 40x20 singles Sean Falloon and Pat Havern put up strong showings in the U15 and U17 sections respectfully. Pat made it to the quarter final before being narrowly beaten by one of the top seeds Galen Riordan. Sean was unlucky to meet one of the top under 15 players in the country in Oisin Foley however he can take some consolation in the fact that Foley was pushed all the way in this game. In the men’s C both the Turley brothers Martin and Colm were in action in doubles and having accounted for a Japanese pairing in the first round  lost out to a tough Wexford pairing in a tight second match. However they made up for this disappointment a few days later, both players having good runs in the One Wall competition, Martin eventually losing to Abbeylara’s Fintan Creamer and Colm losing out in a very close match to club mate Richard McNally who was then beaten in an excellent game by American Donis Alberto. Richard then teamed up with Sean Digney and they were unlucky to lose out to one wall specialists Abbeylara pairing of Fintan Creamer and Johnny Mahon in an exciting tie-break having made it through to the One Wall doubles quarter final. Sean also made it through five rounds of the 40x20 singles before being beaten 11-10 in the deciding game by Dubliner Rob Farrelly in the last eight of a marathon Men C competition with over 190 entrants. In the One wall Over 55 competition Irish Nationals champion Brian Havern teamed up with Peter McSherry and they found found Australians Winter and Warner too tough coming out on the wrong side of a close affair. Both were unluckly in their singles event with Brian losing out to John “Boy” Molloy and Peter losing to Pierce Lawler.

Once again Lorraine Havern having been selected as an official member of team Ireland was our flag bearer reaching the final of the U23 40x20 singles accounting for Wicklow’s Shauna Hilley in the semi – final before being beaten in two games in the Final by Corks Catriona Casey. She also teamed up with newly crowned Women’s open doubles champion Aishling Reily from the St Pauls Club in Belfast in the Women’s Open doubles however their charge was halted at the semi-final stage by legendary Antrim pairing of Fiona Shannon and Sibeal Gallagher. In the one wall Lorraine played in one of the games of the tournament in the Open singles semi-final. Eventual winner Puerto Rico’s Michelle Mendez eventually pipped Lorraine in a tense affair in front of a partisan Irish crowd.

Unfortunately on this occasion Saval did not bring home any winners medals however a special mention should go to Seamus and Sinead Havern in the U 11 singles who look like players for the future both giving very commendable performances in front of large crowds all of whom were impressed by the skills on display.

It’s impossible to name everyone who competed however a huge congratulations must go to all who represented their club with distinction on the world stage.

One Wall Nationals 2012

Last weekend (13th & 14th June) Citywest Sports Arena hosted one of Ireland’s most prestigious handball events, the one wall nationals. Saval was very well represented, 12 people from the club travelled and competed. For a number of them it was a first including Colm Turley, Peter McSherry and Barry Havern. Other competitors were Brian Havern, Lorraine Havern, Richard McNally, Seán Digney, Pat Havern, Seán Fallon, Michael Havern, Seamus and Sinead Havern. Everyone who played got at least two games.

We got the chance to experience a great all Saval encounter which saw Brian Havern face Peter McSherry in the Emerald Masters semi-final. It was edge of the seat stuff with both playing brilliantly, the game ending 14-14, Brian eventually went on to win the match and he became the outright winner by beating Monaghan’s Peter Larkin in the final, a game in which Brian played excellent, demonstrating a lot of different variations of serves.

Saval also saw Lorraine Havern regaining her title from two years ago by beating Antrim’s Fiona Shannon in the ladies open final.

Seán Digney reached the semi-final of the men’s C and was unlucky to be beaten by a couple of points after a tough battled match.

In the boys 17&under section Pat Havern showed some tremendous skill on his route to the semi-final by seeing off Tyrone favourite Johnny Woods but came up short against Monaghan’s Darren Doherty.

Colm Turley was unlucky to be beaten by a point in the men’s challenger plate semi-final.

It was a very enjoyable weekend for both players and spectators alike. All the excitement is now building up for the Worlds Handball 40x20 and one wall which again will be held at the Citywest arena from 11th-21st October 2012.
