Saval v Liatroim @ Pairc Esler

‘A Great Start To The Championship’

Saval showed great character and passion in this championship battle having gone down to thirteen men. Undeterred the Savalites fought back with Danny Hughes scoring a crucial goal just 3 minutes From Full – Time. Many would have thought the odds were greatly stacked against Saval when Darren Cunnigham and Philip madine were sent off during the second period. Against the Liatroim’s numerical advantage Danny Hughes provided the much needed inspiration for Saval, amassing a personal tally 1-05.

In the first half the scoreline was level four times, yet it was evident that Saval should have been further ahead creating numerous goal opportunities through Michael McCarthy, Danny Hughes and Niall Madine. The appearance of Liatroim’s Liam Doyle in the 2nd Half caused some interest, but Saval marched on with Bredan Turley scoring the first goal of the game. This was quickly followed by points from Danny Hughes and Darren Cunningham leaving the score 1-07 to 0-04 at the third quarter. Things had changed dramatically when Saval was down to thirteen letting the Fontenoys back into the game. Despite Liatroims numerical advantage Saval Held on to record a great win.

Danny Hughes performance was outstanding but we should also note the impressive performances throughout the Saval Team such as, Michael Clarke at Half Back, the Madine brothers at midfield, the entire half forward line, with Michael McCarthy and Stephen Kearney providing great displays of football.
