On Thursday evening Saval GAC hosted another successful County Feile Na nGael Handball competition. RGU and Saval contested the final which was enjoyed by players and spectators alike. The Saval pairing of Ciaran Bagnal and Michael Havern played Riain Doran and Ciaran Hampton of the RGU in the first tie and put on a fine display with some quality exchanges packed with passing shot, low drives and roof shots. The strength of the Saval pairing was clear and despite the best efforts of the RGU lads, Saval won 21-8 points.
The second tie featured Saval’s Sean Fallon and Fintan Havern against RGU’s Paul Smyth and Conor Walters. Again quality rallies featured in a nail biting encounter with scoring neck and neck throughout the match. The game was locked at 20-20 with the service being exchanged six times at game point before the Saval lads clinched the match with an irretrievable two wall passing shot. The honours for the skills competition also went with Saval with Sean Fallon, one of the County’s most promising young players, putting on a fine display of the key skills to take the honours.
Both teams represented their clubs for Saturday’s parade in Castlewellan and went on to enjoy a day of promoting handball for other clubs in the county with coaching sessions and handball demonstrations at a specially erected one wall court organised by members of the Castlewellan club and the County Feile Committee.
