Michael Havern wins Captain's Day in Dundalk

Saturday the 8th September seen the final outing of the season, and Barrie McCoy's Captain's Day played in beautiful sunshine. Michael Havern shot an excellent score of 41 pts to claim Captain's prize. Sources tell me that he was out practicing all week, determined to win the Captain's prize, well it goes to show a little practice and determination can go a long in achieving your goals, well done Mickey, he finished well clear of the field with Damien Redmond (32pts), Seamus Sands & Barrie McCoy (31pts) his nearest rivals. The society would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Barrie on a great year as Captain and would like to thank him the quality of prizes on show on Captain's Day, they top class prizes, well done Barrie. The Goody Bags for the Captain's Day were sponsored by  O'Hare's Supervalue, Mayobridge, the Society would like to thank them for their generosity on Barrie big day, thank you.

As this was the last outing of the season, the Player of the Year and the Gross Player of the Year were decided, in the Player of the Year, Barrie McCoy had lead all the way to the last day where Michael Havern's 1st place was enough to pip Barrie for the title by one point, Michael needed to win to take the honors, so congratulations to Michael Havern, Saval Golfing Society Player of the Year. Barrie was also leading the Gross Player of the Year, this time he could only be caught by Seamus Sands or Michael Havern, so his second place finish in the Gross secure his first title, so congratulations to Barrie McCoy, Saval Golfing Society Gross Player of the Year

Garry was pushed all the way by Michael Havern beating him on the countback, J.Rice made the podium for the first time in a very long finish one shot back and would have won it but the buggy must have run out of fuel or did Jack run out of fuel. The roll of Honour on the day was as follows;

Seamus was pushed all the way by Captain Barrie McCoy (34pts), Michael Sands (34pts), and Michael Havern (34pts). There was a few large explosions over the last few holes by the chasing pack, which I am sure was heard all the way back in Saval, not that I would mention any names , Mickey H, Greengrass. If only, maybe the result would have been different.The roll of Honour on the day was as follows;

In the Player of the Year, the chasing pack would need a really good result over the last two outings to catch Barrie, a minimum of two second places is required by M Havern, whereas S.Sands would need at least 2no third places to beat Barrie’s figure provided Barrie does not finish above Michael H or Seamus in the last two outings. Gross player of the year is closer with Mick Sands total only from 3no outings, so a 1st in the next outing will put him in the lead provided Seamus or Barrie does not finish in second, Mickey Redmond will need a 1st and minimum 2nd   in the next two outings to claim the title.

Saturday the 26th May seen the 2nd outing of the new season, played for once in beautiful sunny but windy conditions. Michael Havern shot an excellent score of 37 pts to claim first prize. Michael was pushed all the way by Captain Barrie McCoy (35pts). The biggest surprise of the day was the longest drive being won by the one and only Gerry McCarthy, even with all the young big hitters on display, well done Gerry, all the praying in Lourdes must have helped.

Barrie McCoy is the Captain

of the Saval Golfing Society for 2012

At the recent AGM of the Saval Golfing Society, held in the Saval GAC club, Barrie McCoy was announced as the new Captain for 2012, in fact, he will be the 25th Captain of the Society.

This year is the 25th Year of the Society’s existence, and we still have some of the original members involved. Who would have thought it would have lasted this long way back at the first meeting in the Cove Bar in 1987.

To mark the 25th Anniversary, it was decided to reduce the membership for this year only to £25.00 and have an open invitation for all ex members to join for this year or if that does not suit, it will be open for all those ex members to attend the 12th July outing as a celebration of the 25 years.

The 25th AGM was poorly attended but as usual there was enough there to have very constructed debates on the various points raised, the following election of officers were made.

1.       Captain – Barrie McCoy

2.       Secretary – Seamus Sands

3.       Treasurer – Michael Redmond

4.       Starters – Damien Redmond, Dominic McCarthy

5.       Meals Co-ordinator – Patrick (Rusty) McCarthy

6.       Marking the Cards – Anthony Rice

7.       Handicap & Rules Committee – Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Anthony Rice

The following agreements were made:

1.       5no outings with Captain’s Day planned for 1st September possibly in Dundalk

2.       Depending on the deals Knightsbrook on the 12th July, and Rockmount for the first outing, Secretary to get the best deals possible at the time

3.       Membership subscription to be £25 for this year only to mark the 25th anniversary

4.       Renew membership of the Golfing Union of Ireland

5.       Weekend to be in Kilkenny – Date agreed is 22nd June, Mount Juliet Friday 22nd, Gowran Park Saurday 23rd, Castlecomer 24th June (will include buggies as per last year), 2no nights bed breakfast, 2no evening meals in the Hotel Kilkenny 4*, including the 3no rounds of golf, for a total price of €275/person, to secure your place which are limited please contact the secretary as soon as possible. seamussands@gmail.com

6.       Player of the Year – Seamus Sands

7.       Gross Player of the Year – Seamus Sands

8.       The Player & Gross Player of the Year to be decided from your best results of 4no out of the 6 counting outings, with the first day of the society weekend included

9.       Handicaps would be revised upwards, with each member getting 4no shots back provided it does not go about his official club (GUI) handicap.

10.   The Secretary and the Treasurer have stayed on for another year in the agreement that there would be a successor in place, his was agreed at the meeting with Barrie McCoy taking on the secretary’s role and Gary Sands taking the treasurer’s role in 2013.

The Society would like to this opportunity to wish Barrie McCoy an enjoyable year as the Captain of the Society.

"Please Note a €50 deposit per person is required as soon as possible to secure your place for the Society Weekend, there are a limited number of places required "

Gary Sands Wins  Paul Fearon’s  Captain’s Day in Concra Wood

Saturday the 15th October seen 32 players descend to  Concra Wood in Castleblayney for Paul Fearon’s Captain’s Day . The weather unfortunately was not good but no matter everyone plated their part to make this an enjoyable day. Paul set everyone out with a goody bag and handed out a range of fantastic prizes, it is obviously  there  was alot of influence on the prizes from Paula.

Gary Sands shot an excellent 31 points in what could be described as atrocious underfoot conditions,  he was closely followed by Seamus Sands (30pts), there were some very low scores on the day but we will not mention any names.

Congratulations to Paul on a very successful Captain’s Day and very successful year as Captain. Next year will be the 25th Anniversary of the Society, so it would be nice to see some of the past members joining again for this special year. We will plan next year at the AGM in November.

The final positions for the Player of the Year and the Gross Player of the Year have now been calculated, the winners will be presented at the AGM.
